Virginia Beach Heating Installation & Repair Company

Finding the right heating and air conditioning company in Virginia Beach is important to ensure you receive top-notch service for installation, maintenance, and repairs. There are a few key factors to evaluate when choosing an HVAC contractor for your home or business:

Licensing and Certifications – Any HVAC company operating in Virginia Beach needs to hold the proper licenses and certifications required by the state and city. This includes a DPOR (Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation) license. Always verify licensing before hiring a contractor.

Reviews and Ratings – Do some research online to read customer reviews and see ratings for local HVAC companies. This will give you a sense of their quality of work and customer service. Look for contractors with consistently positive feedback.

Experience – More experienced companies will likely have seen a wider range of heating and cooling issues. Ask about how long they have been in business and what type of specialized training their technicians have. Many years of experience is a good sign.

Services Offered – The right HVAC company should offer a full range of services you may need, including AC installation and repair, furnace installation, heat pump services, ductwork, indoor air quality solutions, and maintenance plans.

Common Heating and Cooling Services Offered

Virginia Beach experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. To keep homes and businesses comfortable year-round, heating and air conditioning companies offer a range of services.

AC Installation and Repair

Air conditioner installation is crucial during the summer months in Virginia Beach. HVAC companies offer expert AC unit selection, sizing, and installation to match each property’s needs. For existing AC systems, they provide maintenance, repairs, and upgrades as needed. Services include checking refrigerant levels, cleaning coils, changing filters, fixing leaks, replacing worn parts, and more.

Heat Pump Installation

Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling from one system. They are an energy-efficient option for Virginia Beach’s climate. HVAC companies can recommend, install, and maintain suitable electric or gas-powered heat pumps.

Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Ductless mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps are a popular choice in Virginia Beach. They allow zoning and targeted temperature control. HVAC professionals can install mini-split systems in older homes without ductwork or to supplement existing HVAC units.

Furnace and Boiler Services

While less common than cooling services, furnaces and boilers provide essential heating during Virginia Beach’s cooler months. Skilled HVAC techs handle furnace and boiler inspections, maintenance, repairs, and installations.

Air Filtration/Indoor Air Quality

Good indoor air quality is important for health and comfort. HVAC companies offer air filtration solutions including high-MERV filters, HRV/ERV ventilation systems, UV lights, and whole-home air purifiers. They can diagnose and fix indoor air quality issues.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats help maximize HVAC system efficiency. Local HVAC companies install smart thermostats like Ecobee and Nest. They can be controlled via smartphone and integrate with other smart home devices.

New HVAC System Installation

When it’s time to replace your existing heating and cooling system, proper installation of the new HVAC system is crucial for performance, efficiency, and longevity. Here are some key steps for installing a new system:

Determine the Correct System Size

The size of the HVAC system must be properly matched to your home’s square footage and insulation. A unit that is too small won’t be able to cool or heat your home effectively. A unit that is oversized will lead to short-cycling and higher energy bills. An HVAC contractor should perform calculations based on factors like your home’s size, layout, number of windows, climate, and more.

Select Energy Efficient Options

Look for ENERGY STAR rated heating and cooling equipment, which will save you money on utility bills over time. Features like variable-speed compressors, smart thermostats, and zoned control systems also improve efficiency. Discuss options like these with potential contractors.

Consider Ductless vs Central Air

Ductless mini-split systems are an efficient option for homes without existing ductwork. They allow for zoning to tailor the temperature in different rooms. Central air conditioning requires ductwork but evenly distributes air throughout the home.

Hire a Licensed Contractor

Be sure to hire an HVAC company with licensed technicians, proper insurance coverage, and a reputation for quality work. Get quotes from multiple contractors before deciding.

Get Permits if Required

Your HVAC contractor will determine if your jurisdiction requires permits for installing new HVAC equipment. Permits ensure proper code compliance.

Following these guidelines will help ensure your new HVAC system keeps your home comfortable for years to come. A reputable contractor can advise you on the best options for your home and budget.

HVAC Maintenance and Tune-Ups: Extending the Life of Your HVAC System

Regular maintenance and tune-ups are essential for keeping your HVAC system running efficiently and extending its lifespan. It’s recommended to schedule an annual tune-up before the start of each cooling and heating season. During a tune-up, an HVAC technician will inspect, clean, and adjust components if needed. This includes checking refrigerant levels, testing electrical components, changing filters, cleaning coils and drains, and lubricating moving parts.

Changing your air filters every 1-3 months is one of the best ways to maintain your system. Clogged filters force your HVAC system to work harder and can lead to damage. Replacing them regularly keeps air flowing freely through the ductwork. Electrostatic and pleated filters do the best job of capturing dust and allergens.

It’s important to be aware of any changes in your system’s performance. Strange noises, uneven heating or cooling, or spikes in energy bills can indicate a repair is needed. An unusual smell or burning odor is a red flag – you should call an HVAC technician immediately. Having minor issues addressed quickly can prevent more expensive breakdowns down the road.

Investing in regular maintenance helps ensure your HVAC system will keep your home comfortable for years to come. It extends the lifespan of components and prevents costly emergency repairs. Proper maintenance also improves energy efficiency, saving you money on utility bills. Protect your investment and breathe easier by scheduling annual tune-ups.

Improving Energy Efficiency

Improving the energy efficiency of your home’s heating and cooling system can lead to significant savings on energy bills. There are several steps Virginia Beach homeowners can take to increase HVAC efficiency:

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats allow you to set different temperatures for when you are home versus away. This prevents energy waste from heating or cooling an empty home. Smart thermostats take this a step further by optimizing temperature based on your schedule and presence.

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

An energy audit will identify areas of energy loss and provide recommendations for efficiency upgrades. Common problem areas include inadequate insulation, air leaks, and outdated equipment. Many local utilities offer discounted or free audits.

Ensure Proper Insulation

Having proper insulation in walls, attics, basements, and crawl spaces is crucial to prevent cooled or heated air from escaping. Upgrading old, ineffective insulation to modern materials can significantly improve efficiency.

Upgrade to a High Efficiency HVAC System

New ENERGY STAR certified systems can be over 50% more efficient than outdated units. Features like variable speed motors precisely control energy use based on demand. Consider ductless mini-split systems as well.

Look Into Rebates and Incentives

Many local utilities and state programs offer rebates for upgrading to high efficiency HVAC equipment and thermostats. There are also tax credits available for energy efficiency improvements.

Indoor Air Quality: Improving Your Home’s Air

Indoor air quality is often overlooked, yet it has a major impact on your health and comfort. Here are some tips for improving the air quality in your Virginia Beach home:

Identify Common Pollutants

The most common indoor air pollutants include mold, dust mites, pet dander, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from household cleaners and building materials, radon gas, carbon monoxide, and more. Pay attention to any musty odors, irritation, or illness after spending time in certain rooms.

Consider Air Purifiers

Portable air purifiers and HVAC air filters can remove many airborne particles. HEPA air purifiers are highly effective at trapping pollutants. Install units with the proper CADR rating for the room size.

Install Humidity Control

Excess moisture leads to mold growth. Dehumidifiers and HVAC systems that regulate humidity help keep levels between 30-50%. Ventilate kitchens and bathrooms properly after use.

Replace HVAC Filters Regularly

Dirty filters restrict airflow and allow pollutants to circulate. Change filters every 1-3 months as recommended. Electrostatic and pleated filters trap more particles.

Schedule Duct Cleaning

Over time, dust, dander and particles accumulate in ductwork. Hire professionals to deep clean ducts every 3-5 years for optimal air circulation.

Proper humidity, filtration and ventilation go a long way towards providing clean, healthy indoor air free of irritants. Consult HVAC professionals to improve your home’s overall air quality.

HVAC for Commercial Spaces

Commercial properties like office buildings, retail stores, and restaurants have unique HVAC needs compared to residential homes. These types of spaces require specialized commercial HVAC systems that are powerful enough to maintain comfortable temperatures in large, open areas.

Commercial HVAC units are more robust and feature heavy-duty compressors and larger air handlers. They offer zoning capabilities so different areas of the building can be controlled independently. Powerful air filtration systems are also standard for improving indoor air quality.

Regular maintenance and tune-ups are crucial for commercial HVAC systems. Professional technicians should inspect the units at least twice a year. They can identify potential problems early and ensure the systems are operating efficiently. Things like changing air filters, cleaning coils and drains, and checking refrigerant levels are key.

Many commercial HVAC systems now include advanced programmable thermostats. These smart devices optimize start and stop times based on the building’s occupancy schedule. Programmable thermostats help reduce energy costs and maximize comfort when employees arrive.

It’s also important for businesses to meet all local and federal standards for HVAC inspections. Professional contractors can ensure the systems comply with building codes and environmental regulations. With the right maintenance, commercial HVAC equipment can provide many years of reliable temperature control.

Choosing an HVAC Contractor

Choosing the right heating and air conditioning contractor is crucial to getting quality service and avoiding issues down the road. Here are some tips for selecting a reputable HVAC company in Virginia Beach:

Verify Licensing and Insurance

Make sure any contractor you consider is properly licensed in Virginia and insured. This protects you in case of any damages or accidents during service. Ask to see active copies of their state HVAC license, business license, and liability insurance.

Review Ratings and Qualifications

Research companies online and read reviews on sites like Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. Look for contractors with consistently positive feedback and few complaints. It’s also good to choose an HVAC company that has highly trained technicians and has been operating for several years.

Get Detailed Quotes in Writing

Avoid verbal estimates – always get written quotes from at least 3 contractors. Quotes should detail the scope of work, specific equipment to be used, project timeline, warranties, and cost breakdown including labor and materials.

Ask About Warranties

Reputable HVAC companies will stand behind their work. Ask about labor warranties on installation and repairs (1 year minimum) as well as equipment warranties.

Check References

Ask contractors for references from recent customers. Call them to ask if they were satisfied with the company’s work, pricing, and professionalism. Good HVAC contractors should have multiple happy customer references.

Following these tips will help you find the most qualified, reliable HVAC company for your heating and cooling needs in Virginia Beach.

Preparing for Seasonal Weather

To keep your HVAC system operating efficiently in Virginia Beach’s hot summers and mild winters, it’s important to perform seasonal maintenance.

Schedule a pre-season tune-up with an HVAC technician to inspect your system and make any necessary repairs before peak heating or cooling season. They can check refrigerant levels, tighten connections, clean coils and drainage systems, and ensure your system is ready for months of regular use.

Be sure to change the filters at least a month before summer and winter begin. Clogged filters make your system work harder and waste energy. Replacing them ahead of time prevents issues down the road.

Inspect the area around your outdoor AC unit and clean up any debris or foliage touching the unit. Plants and grass that obstruct airflow can reduce efficiency by up to 30%. Trim back bushes, trees or vines to allow unrestricted air circulation.

Test your AC on a hot day in early summer. Turn the system on and ensure it cools properly before the major heat waves hit. If there are any problems, you’ll have time to address them before you desperately need the cooling.

For forced air heating systems, bleed radiators a few weeks before winter to remove trapped air. Use a radiator key to open the valve and release air pockets that can impede water circulation and heat output. This maximizes efficiency when you switch on your heat.

Performing this seasonal HVAC maintenance will optimize performance, prevent issues, and ensure your system provides comfortable heating and cooling all year long.

Troubleshooting Common HVAC Issues

If you notice any unusual issues with your HVAC system, don’t ignore them. Small problems can turn into big headaches if left untreated. Here are some of the most common HVAC problems and what to do about them:

Strange Noises or Smells

Clanking, banging, or strange smells coming from your HVAC system are signs something is wrong. Unusual noises may indicate a loose part or buildup of debris. Smells like burning plastic could mean an electrical issue. Have your HVAC contractor inspect these issues promptly before they lead to system failure.

Uneven Cooling or Heating

If some rooms feel much warmer or cooler than others, your HVAC system may have a refrigerant leak. This reduces its ability to evenly distribute air. Refrigerant leaks require professional repair to locate and seal.

Leaks Around Vents

Leaky ductwork leads to energy loss and humidity buildup. Check for visible mold or moisture around vents. If the ducts leak cold air, you may also notice uneven cooling. Have a technician seal any leaky ducts.

High Energy Bills

If your energy bills suddenly spike, your HVAC system may be working overtime due to low refrigerant, old parts, or improper sizing. Schedule a tune-up to improve efficiency. An upgrade to a newer, properly sized unit can pay for itself in energy savings.

Frozen Coils or Drainage Issues

Clogged condensate drains can cause water to back up and freeze your HVAC coils. This prevents air flow. In humid climates like Virginia Beach, have your drains cleaned annually to allow proper drainage. Frozen coils require defrosting by a professional.

Regular maintenance helps avoid many HVAC headaches. But if problems arise, never hesitate to call a trusted HVAC company. The sooner issues get diagnosed, the less risk of expensive repairs down the road.
